Symbol codes play crucial roles in web development, ensuring the proper display and interpretation of characters across different platforms, languages, and browsers. A symbol can be represented by Unicode, Hex Code, HTML Code, and CSS Entity. Some characters can also be represented by an HTML entity code, but not all characters have HTML entity codes.

Choosing the Right Symbol Format

The same symbol can appear as a character, Unicode code point, HTML entity, numeric reference, or CSS escape. The best form depends on where you are placing it.

HTML content

Named entities are readable when available, while numeric HTML codes are more complete across the Unicode range.

CSS content

CSS escapes are useful for pseudo-elements, generated labels, and icon-style decorative marks.
